Derry City Walls
One of the best places to see in Derry to begin your discovery of this city (also known as Londonderry) is a walk approximately 1.5km along the historic 17th century city walls. Derry City is the last remaining completely walled city in Ireland and the walls, which were completed in 1618, were the last such defensive walls built in Europe.
Roe Valley Country Park
Located on the outskirts of Limavady in Derry Ireland, Roe Valley Country Park is an attractive and charming country park that stretches along either side of the River Roe. Home to over 60 species of bird along with foxes, otters and badgers the park is popular with nature enthusiasts and it is also an excellent spot for fishing, walking, rock climbing and canoeing.
Tower Museum
Located at Union Hall Place within Derry City’s historic 17th century walls the award winning Tower museum offers visitors the opportunity to uncover the fascinating and unique history of Derry interactively in one of the museum’s permanent exhibitions “The Story of Derry”. The exhibition charts the history of the city from monastic times through the plantation, the Siege of Derry, partition and the civil rights movement in Derry Ireland along with the impact of the Troubles. Other exhibitions include An Armada Shipwreck with a collection of artefacts recovered from the ship.
Castlerock
A popular places to see in Derry with summer visitors, Castlerock is a seaside village in Derry Ireland with a beautiful sandy beach and an enticing 18 hole links golf course. Situated approximately 8 minutes drive from Coleraine the village of Castlerock is a popular place with summer visitors to the Derry area. A beautiful sandy beach approx 1km long and with views of the sea cliffs of Downhill is an ideal place to relax and unwind or enjoy a round of golf at the enticing 18 hole Castlerock links golf course.
Coleraine
Coleraine with its attractive pedestrian town centre and marina is one of the largest towns on the Causeway Coast. Located 30 miles (48.3km) from the City of Derry Northern Ireland on the banks of the River Bann the town is home to a university and bustling atmosphere with plenty to do in the area for visitors with nearby golf courses, amusements, great shopping, a beach and picturesque countryside. The Giants Causeway is also a must see for visitors to the area.
Derry City
Hosting numerous festivals and events and having been ranked the 4th best city to visit in 2013 by Lonely Planet the city of Derry is emerging from a long and tumultuous history to show what a vibrant, friendly intriguing and exceptionally interesting place it is. The Derry City Walls, one of the most important urban sites in Ireland, are an essential attraction to take in for anyone visiting the city.
Limavady
Limavady, a market town, is situated in the beautiful Roe Valley area in Derry Ireland. The town is located 17 miles (27 Km) approximately 30 minute drive from Derry City and 14 miles (23km) from Coleraine. The tune Londonderry Air (used for the famous song “Danny Boy”) was discovered in Limavady by Jane Ross in the 19th century when she heard the tune from a local fiddle player. The name Limavady comes from the Gaelic Léim a’ Mhadaidh and means “leap of the dog” and several legends surround the naming of the town, one being that a dog jumped across the River Roe to warn the people of an enemy attack.
Portstewart
Portstewart is a small picturesque town in County Derry which has been a popular destination for over a century. Situated on the coast line of the very North of Ireland Portstewart is also home to the well known Portstewart Golf Club and neighbours another famous locality for visiting golfers – Portrush and the Royal Portrush Golf Club. Portstewart Strand holds the prestigious Blue Flag award and it attracts a wide range of visitors yearly, the beach with its much loved promenade stretches for 2 miles and the area is preserved by the National Trust.
